Data Sheets
This page contains data and specification on my 3.8L M5. Most, if not all, engine specs and torques are the same for the 3.6L engine as well. The parts are nearly all identical. The bore is the same on both engines, the 3.8L has a longer stroke. All torque values are in ft. lbs. which will have to be converted to Newton*meters. To convert, multiply by 1.3556. At the advice of Jime Rowe at Metric Mechanic, I don't do the angle turns, just work out converting to an actual torque. I tested this theory on the main caps and a 53° turn which measured about 47 ft. lbs.
| Engine | BMW Spec | Actual (ft. lbs.) | Comment |
| Main bearing cap | 15-18, + an additional 47-53 degree turn | 45 | Main caps only go on one way |
| Rod caps | 15-18, + an additional 47-53 degree turn | 45 | Rods have matching numbers on the rod and cap. The numbers are both on the passenger side. |
| Oil pump mounting bolts | 15 -17 ft. lbs | 16 | |
| Oil pump drive gear | 18 - 22 | 20 | |
| Rear main seal housing | M6 bolts 7-8 M8 bolts 12-15 |

Make sure the small bolts only get 8 ft. lbs.! I broke one when I gave it the wrong one. These M6 bolts cannot handle much beyond 10. |
| Cam chain cover | M6 bolts 7-8 M8 bolts 12-15 |

| Oil pan | 7-9 | 9 | Alternating every other bolt to 6ft. lbs, then all to 9. Double check. |
| Oil level sensor | 7-8 | 8 | Only goes on one way. |
| Motor mount to block bolts | M8 bolts 14-16 M10 bolts 30 |

Drivers side motor mount has a bracket for the oil level sensor connector. It goes on the lower right bolt. |
| Harmonic balancer main bolts | 82-94 | 90 | Better eat your Wheaties |
| Crank pully bolts | 15-17 | 17 | |
| Accessory bracket mounting bolts | M8 bolts 14-16 | 16 | |
